E&I Technician (Electrical & Instrumentation Technician)

Description

This role is responsible for implementing continuous improvements, conducting electrical and instrument design, and performing fault analysis on fully automated machinery. The technician ensures equipment meets specific safety, production, quality, and engineering availability criteria while providing high-level support to Shift Artisans and the specialized maintenance team within an explosives/chemical/mining manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Analyse E&I unplanned downtime and assist in generating reports
  • Implement initiatives to reduce engineering downtime
  • Report on E&I-related downtime to the Plant Engineer and Maintenance Manager
  • Conduct root cause analysis on major breakdowns
  • Carry out prioritized work orders
  • Collaborate closely with the Mechanical Technician counterpart
  • Design, plan, and execute E&I-related projects

Qualifications

  • Education:
  • Option 1: National Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation & Control, or Mechatronics (SAQA‑registered)
  • Option 2: N4–N6 Electrical Engineering with a completed National N Diploma in Instrumentation
  • Experience:
  • 3-5 years of hands-on experience in electrical, instrumentation, or control systems maintenance within a manufacturing or continuous-process environment (eg, explosives, chemicals, mining, FMCG)
  • Proven experience with SCADA, HMI, and PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc)
  • Experience in fault-finding, diagnostics, and system recovery on automated production equipment
  • Experience with VSD drives, instrumentation, sensors, robotic systems, and pneumatic/hydraulic systems
  • Systems Knowledge: Strong knowledge of industrial instrumentation, control loops, SCADA platforms (Wonderware, WinCC, Ignition), PLC architectures (Siemens S7, Allen-Bradley), HMI development, and industrial networks (Profibus, Profinet)
  • Key Competencies: Advanced troubleshooting, ability to interpret electrical schematics and P&IDs, strong problem-solving, effective communication, ability to work independently under pressure, and strict adherence to safety/SHEQ standards
